Llanybydder 37 - Mumbles 22

Llanybydder  37  Mumbles  22

Llanybydder welcolmed Mumbles to Parc OJ, with the home side desperate to pick up some League points, as Amman Utd’s recent revival  has led to a number of teams becoming concerned about being dragged into the second relegation spot.    The home side were slow to start again,  and tighthead prop Chris Thomas scored an early touchdown for the visitors from a driven lineout, which was well converted from touchline by full-back Mathew Hughes.   Llanybydder  soon got their act together, and for the remainder of the half played some of their best rugby of the season.   The front row  were getting the better of the scrums, whilst returning lock Gary Evans won some clean line-out possession, enabling the back row to forage in the loose and dominate the game.    There were tries for No8 and Man of the match Ricky Davies [2], skipper and openside Stuart Phillips, and wing Martyn Penhallurick , as the home side claimed a bonus point before half time. Fly-half Tom Wilson had varied play intelligently, and was rewarded with 1 penalty and 2 conversions as Llanybydder led 27 – 7 at half-time.

Mumbles had been disrupted by several injuries, but to their credit they continued to be competitive during the second period, with a number of attacks orchestrated by full-back Mathew Hughes and scrum half Andrew Evans, who both claimed tries, as well as left wing Jo Rimmell, as Mumbles claimed a bonus point.    Llanybydder  scored a try by Elia Pellegrotti following a sustained period of pressure, and with Wilson claiming a conversion and penalty the final score was 37 – 22 to give the home side a welcome 5 points in their quest to stay clear of the relegation places.  Llanybydder now have 2 successive vital away matches on Wednesday evenings at Amman Utd and Pontarddulais before returning to Parc OJ on  Saturday 23rd April to entertain Pontyberem.
