Fishguard & Goodwick 24 - Llanybydder 13

Llanybydder travelled to Pembrokeshire  to play Fishguard, looking to avenge a narrow home defeat earlier in season.  Conditions were heavy after the recent persistent rain, with a strong breeze coming in from the sea.   The match was again similar to recent away matches for Llanybydder, mostly a brave performance matching the home side, but one poor period culminating in 3 quick tries for the home side.   It was the visitors who had first use of the strong wind, and fly-half Steff Richards quickly slotted a penalty to take the lead.   However Fishguard’s defence was strong , and eventually the home side had a purple patch in the second quarter,  leading to a try apiece for their marauding back row.   Openside Chis Shousha was first to score after supporting a blindside move from a scrum, to give the home side the lead.    Fishguard continued to press, and after a succession of infringements, referee Jason Ludgate showed a yellow card to away loosehead Zach Lowther after a high tackle.   The home side took full advantage when a strong scrum drove the visitors backwards enabling No 8 Simon James to score  by the posts, converted by fly-half Alun George.    Shortly after, blindside  Jordan James crossed after an excellent 40m , giving Fishguard an excellent 17 – 3 interval lead, with the strong wind in their favour in the second half.

It was a much improved performance by the visitors in the second period, as the forwards carried the ball into the elements,  Substitute Rhys Morris , playing at centre produced several surging runs, which eventually led to a try for the skipper and No 8 Ricky Davies.     Llanybydder started to play with more confidence, having to keep ball in hand, the forwards and backs produced several promising moves.   Blindside Bleddyn Jones made a great run into the home 22, and passed to the supporting Aled Tandderi Evans to reduce the lead to 17 -13, and bring the visitors within range of at least a  deserved bonus point, and looking for an unlikely victory.     However, from the kick-off , Fishguard were awarded a line-out in the Llanybydder 22, after after a succession of phases they worked flanker Shousha over to give the home side their 4th try, and crucially take away Llanybydder’s bonus point.

Llanybydder’s Head Coach Richard Davies was pleased with his side’s effort, but very frustrated that once again a poor 15 minute period, proved crucial in defining the result.  Hopefully the injuries suffered will not be too serious, as Llanybydder look forward to welcoming promotion candidates Whitland next Saturday.
