Llanybydder 22 - Whitland 33

Div 2 West

Llanybydder  22     Whitland  33

Both sides can take great credit from this entertaining match,   with the home side looking to improve on the heavy defeat suffered at Whitland early in the season.   On a heavy pitch,  the away side had first use of the breeze and slope, with fly-half Nico Setaro controlling play with some excellent kicks from hand, gaining territory for his team.  Whitland’s Setaro opened the scoring with a penalty, before home centre Bleddyn Jones capitalized on a mix up to cross for the first try , which was converted by young  fly-half Llew Morgan , playing on permit from NCE.      The Whitland outside backs then took control as wing Scott Chandler scored,  then centre Ryan Davies, on dual registration with Llanelli , set up a try for wing Liam Price, and then Davies hacked through a loose ball himself to score.  2 conversions and a further penalty from Setaro made the half time score 25 – 7  to the visitors.

However , Llanybydder had use of the elements in the second period, and  fly-half Morgan soon added a further penalty.  The home pack was gaining more possession , with the scrums becoming stronger as props Zach Lowther and Mathew Evans , and hooker Bedwyr Davies dominated.   A long period of pressure led to Whitland infringements, and excellent referee Jackey Boswell eventually lost patience and yellow carded experienced lock Dai Ebsworth.  Skipper Ricky Davies opted for  a scrum , and the home pack pushed their visitors back 10 yards, with a penalty try being awarded, and the home supporters sensed an unlikely come-back.   Setaro claimed a further penalty for the visitors, before injuries led to the visitors having to opt for uncontested scrums, which took away the momentum building for the home side.   Further Llanybydder pressure led to a try for hard working skipper and No 8 Ricky Davies.  However, Whitland replied as an effective driving lineout led to No 8 Jack Mason crossing for the bonus point try and secure a hard earned 33 – 22 victory.

Llanybydder will take plenty of positives from the match, and look forward to visiting St Clears next weekend.
