Division 2 West
Llanybydder 26 Carmarthen Athletic 21
Llanybydder welcomed Carmarthen Athletic to OJ Park, and it was another tight match between the 2 teams. The home pack dominated at set-pieces, where the front row of Zach Lowther, Alun Davies and Mathew Evans took control at scrum time leading to numerous turnovers and penalties. Young lock Wyn Davies had an excellent all-round match, while the returning Gary Evans won clean line out ball in the middle. The home side started impressively, with fly-half Llyr Tobias controlling matters, as after several phases No 8 Ricky Davies crossed for an early try. Further pressure led to 2 penalties to wing Steff Davies, whilst centre Gary Evans carved through to score a further try , converted by Davies. Athletic replied with a period of pressure leading to a try for flanker Callum Evans, converted by fly-half Tom Gravell. Half time score 18 – 7.
The second period started with Man of the Match Gary Evans spotting a gap on the blind side, and sprinting in for his 2nd try to give Llanybydder a 23 – 7 lead. Credit to the visitors, as their young side battled bravely to remain in the match, and sustained pressure led to 2 home players receiving yellow cards. The Athletic made their numerical advantage count as converted tries followed for flanker Evans and centre Robbie Thomas to bring the score back to 23 -21. The visitors sensed victory, and tried to up the tempo, but the only further score was a penalty for Llanybydder’s Steff Davies to complete a 26 – 21 victory.
Next week Llanybydder travel to play Fishguard.
